Prescribing Connections, Not Just Pills — What Is Social Prescribing?
In recent years, the term “social prescribing” has begun to appear more often in Japan. While medicines can treat physical symptoms, they cannot always reach loneliness, stress, or the loss of social connection. To address these invisible challenges, the idea of social prescribing has emerged.
In the United Kingdom, the National Health Service (NHS) institutionalized social prescribing more than ten years ago, incorporating creative and community-based activities into healthcare through programs such as “Arts on Prescription.”
Although the practice is still limited in Japan, community-driven initiatives have started to take root. The 2024 Loneliness and Isolation Prevention Act has accelerated this movement, and in a super-aging society with a growing number of people living alone, healthcare is gradually expanding beyond curing diseases to reconnecting people with society.
As an occupational physician, I believe that creating opportunities for art, conversation, and connection in workplaces can serve as another form of treatment—one that supports mental and emotional well-being. Social prescribing represents a new approach to health, one that rebuilds the bridges between individuals and their communities.
In this blog, I will occasionally introduce examples from abroad and explore how art-based initiatives can promote health and well-being.
What might social prescribing look like for you?
